Janet was chosen by the coaches for her strength and perserverance to overcome adversity with a positive attitude.  Janet was diagnosed with breast cancer last April.  She went through four months of chemotherapy, surgery, and six weeks of radiation and played tennis right through every phase.  Janet has finished all her treatments and is as strong as ever! Congratulations!

ABOUT JANET . . .

Janet grew up at Cedardale Groveland and has been a member of Cedardale Health & Fitness since it opened in 1971.  She is married to David Splaine and has two daughters: Ruth and Decia.  Janet has been playing tennis since she was 6 years old and has played competitively for the last 20 years.

What is your favorite thing about tennis?
I love the comradery that comes with tennis.  I love the relationships and friendships I have made through tennis.

What is the best part of  your game?
My forehand and my serve.  I feel I have great control with each shot and place the ball where I want.  I can typically count on these shots when the pressure is on.

What are your favorite things to do outside of tennis?
Everyone knows I love to needle point. But my favorite thing to do is to spend time with my family in Squirrel Island, Maine.

Do you have a tennis goal for 2017?
I want to cover the court better.  Particularly the middle!

For the past 8 months you have been going through various treatments for cancer yet you have not let that get in the way of living your life.  How have you done that?
I tried to keep life as normal as possible.  I didn’t want the cancer to dictate how I lived my life.  I kept doing everything I would normally be doing. I tried to stay strong and positive throughtout the entire ordeal.

What was the last vacation that you took?
I went to the Abacos (by the Bahama Islands) with my family and friends.  We go every Christmas.  We love it there.

Bob was chosen by the coaches for his many years of service to tennis. Bob has been a part of Cedardale’s tennis community from the very beginning.  Bob always has a positive attitude, shows great sportsmanship, and is
always trying to get more people playing tennis.  Even though he is a high level player, Bob will play with any level always looking to help others improve their game.  Bob has spent his life spreading his love of tennis whenever he can.

ABOUT BOB . . .

Bob joined Cedardale Groveland in the 6th grade and has been a member of
Cedardale Health & Fitness since it opened in 1971.  Bob has lived in Haverhill for the past 42 years with his wife Chris and his three children: Tim, Amy and Jeff.
Bob was a Tennis Professional at Cedardale in the early years and coached Amy and Jeff into college level tennis players.

What is your favorite thing about tennis?
I love that I can still compete and play tennis.  You don’t have to give up tennis.  I had to stop playing the other sports I played - baseball, basketball, football.  Tennis is truly a lifetime sport.

What is your biggest accomplishment in tennis?
My biggest accomplishment in tennis is what my son, Jeff got from tennis.  I told all my kids to use the sport you love the most to get you something in life.  Tennis opened many doors for Jeff.  The same thing happened for my other kids too.  Tim and Amy played baseball and basketball in college respectively.  This is my biggest accomplishment.

What are your favorite things to do outside of tennis?
I LOVE to coach.  I still coach high school basketball.  My new daughter-in-law calls me “Coach.”  Whenever we go out golfing, she tells my son “I’m not listening to you.  I’m only listening to Coach.”

You have gone to Nationals 11 out of the last 13 years.  What is your secret to playing so well?
Practice!  Even in my 60’s, I am continually trying to improve my game.  The game is always changing and players need to adjust to it.

Why do you love coaching so much?
I get satisfaction in seeing someone improve or achieve a goal they set out to achieve.

What was the last vacation that you took?
Besides coaching, traveling is my favorite thing to do.  Last year Chris , Jeff and I took a trip out to Napa,CA.
At the end of the week in Napa, Chris and I spend some time at Yellowstone National Park.  It was a great trip!
