Vitamin & Supplement Series: Whey Protein

Vitamin and Supplement Series: Whey Protein

The past few weeks I have reviewed several different vitamin supplements like vitamin D, multivitamins, calcium, and vitamin C. I’d like to discuss a different type of supplements this week: whey protein. Whey protein is a wildly common supplement available at almost any large retailer, pharmacy, and vitamin shop. It is taken for a majority of reasons but the most common is post-workout nutrition.

Whey protein comes in many different forms. You can find it added into bars, pre-made drinks, pills, and most commonly powder form. It is quick, easy, and convenient for busy exercisers. Whey protein is considered generally safe with few side effects. It also comes in wide range of quality and prices. When choosing a good quality whey protein, take a look at the ingredients. Other than whey protein, what is in the powder? Added sugars, artificial sweeteners, flavorings, colors, preservatives, etc. are common ingredients you should beware of. Many whey protein supplements are loaded with sugar adding extra calories you don’t need. A good quality whey protein should be 100% whey protein, nothing else.

To determine if you need a whey protein supplement or not, take a look at your overall diet. Is it low in protein? If so, then a supplement may be necessary. If you can get enough protein from foods like nuts, beans, low-fat dairy, soy, and lean proteins, then don’t waste your money on a supplement. Focus on real foods and you won’t miss out on all of the essential vitamins and minerals in foods. After your next workout, add plain greek yogurt or soy milk to your smoothie for extra protein.
