Tennis Tip - How to Hit an Effective Lob

HOW TO HIT AN EFFECTIVE LOB

BY: JESSICA MOLDA

imgWe have all had matches where we faced “a lobber”. Those players that drive us bananas with their incessant lobbying. Although it does drive many a tennis player crazy, it is absolutely a required tool in the toolbox for every player and the best defensive weapon you can own.

For either a forehand or backhand, the easiest way to hit a lob is in the continental grip. To get into the grip, grab your racquet like you are shaking someone’s hand sliding your hand to the end of the racquet. A lob is essentially a block or a bunt, if you will. Once you decide to lob, get into the continental grip, bring the racquet back and go for a low to high swing. This is one instance on the court where you do NOT need to accelerate, nor do you need to follow through. Simply block the ball low to high with a slightly open racquet face. Your goal for the lob is not to hit a winner, but to make your opponents scramble and get off the net.

The lob will get your opponents off balance, and give you the time you need to go from defense to either neutral or potentially offense, depending on the quality of the lob. It can be used during the point and should be considered as a return of serve at times as well.
